Until Dawn has been sitting in the disc drive of this scribe for the best part of almost a week, and after three play throughs, the dialogue doesn’t get any better. It’s that typical kind of cheesy American tripe we’re used to hearing in cinemas when we go and watch some naff teen horror movie.
It’s okay though and the art of the spoken word isn’t completely ruined in Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn. In fact, it’s actually pretty good in some parts and there are a fair many instances where you’ll have a guilty giggle at a particularly cheddary line. The good news is that it’s not all a mistake, as explained by one of the game’s writers, Graham Reznick.
Speaking with Rely on Horror, Reznick explained that the writers “used elements of the genre tropes and the cheesy aspects of the genre to creat a specific atmosphere that’s then twisted and reshaped,” going on to explain that “it’s all intentional and done with a lot of care. If you hear a line that makes you laugh or cringe and you’re like “Oh my god, that’s ridiculous,” chances are high that we thought so too!”
If you’ve been playing through Until Dawn, you’re bound to have come across a few moments where you’ve though that it’s all a bit of a misguided joke. It’s all good though, and we can tell you that even after playing through the game a couple of times, there’s still some fun in the characters.
Our review for Until Dawn is almost ready to go live, so be sure to check in and have a nosey.
