In an interview with 4Gamer Sony’s SVP, Masayasu Ito, confirmed that their first-party studios will no longer be making games for PS Vita, instead they will be concentrating on the PS4. Here’s exactly what Ito had to say: “Currently, first-party studios have no titles in development for PS Vita. Since third-parties are working very hard on PS Vita, SCE’s own strategy is to focus on PS4, which is our new platform.”
This hardly comes as a surprise since Sony has never really supported the Vita internally, with only two stand out titles coming from their own studios: Uncharted: The Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary, and a handfull of lacklustre titles . In fact it has been third-party support, mainly indie, that has kept the console alive for this long in the first place.
Ito does seem confident that the Vita will continue to get support well into the future and expects sales to pick up which indicates Sony will continue to manufacture the console. Here’s exactly what he had to say: “[…] a variety of third-party games is also planned for the future, and in order to accelerate that flow, we decided to release new colours for the PS Vita this fall.”
It is a shame that the Vita became such a great console that only a minority of people have experienced. How do you feel about the Vita and its lack of first-party support? Let us know in the comments below.
