Dead Island: Riptide, the upcoming sequel to the popular Dead Island, will not be released in Germany. Germany is rather infamous for its unique laws regulating violent video games. The Dead Island developers are not surprised but creative producer for Dead Island: Riptide Sebastian Reichert criticized the ban. To explain the ban Reichert said “it was a problem that you could attack the zombies when they are dead, because that’s mutilation of corpses.”
Any disrespect towards dead bodies, especially mutilation is treated very seriously in Germany. Reichert countered this saying that the mutilation of the bodies is not at all encouraged, “We even punish the player if he does it, because if the player tries to stab and slash everything that lies around him, his weapon will break and he’s f*cked. We’re not even rewarding him, we’re punishing him for that stuff.”
Reichert also had some questions about the video game banning regulations, asking why he could go down to the store and purchase a copy of Gears of War 3. He believes that the enemies in Gears of War 3 are human like, and that some of the deaths are just as gruesome as in Dead Island: Riptide
They’re no plans for a censored version of the game to be released in Germany
The original Dead Island was released in September 2011, and received generally positive reviews, the sequel will be released in April of 2013.
