Crytek, the people behind the Crysis series are aiming to go completely free-to-play in the future.
Following on from Warface, the company is backing the free-to-play model more than any other company and are more than serious about it.
Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli expressed his opinions and the company’s goals in an interview with GamesBeat.
“We have quite a few console titles in our pipeline that are [traditional retail games] while we investigate free-to-play on consoles,” says Yerli. “But our primary goal is to make triple-A free-to-play games for the world market and transition entirely to that.”
Free-to-play games were once confined to smartphones and Facebook, but in recent years the business model has taken off in leaps and bounds, with the likes of Dust 514 soon gracing the PS3 and numerous MMO games attracting players with the promise of “only pay if you want to.”
I’m not a big fan of free-to-play games to be honest. You never know what you’re getting in to until it’s too late. The idea of getting a game for free might sound attractive, but then there’s the kerfuffle of buying all the stuff you think you might need to progress.
I’m not saying it can’t work or there’s no space in the market for them, but what about single player games? Free-to-play might work well with online shooters and what not, but the idea of getting into a single player game and having to buy a certain weapon to progress is surely every gamers nightmare.
