Some great news for the PlayStation 4: it will play pre-owned games.
The rumour that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 wouldn’t allow the use of pre-owned titles has been floating around the internet and school playgrounds, even the water coolers in offices for months now, but it’s finally been cleared up by Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss that the PlayStation 4 will indeed allow consumers to play used games.
Speaking to Eurogamer Mr Yoshida was asked about the state of used games and where they would sit with the PlayStation 4, his response was:
“Do you want us to do that?” he asked when questioned whether the new console would block used games. “Yes. That’s the general expectation by consumers,” Mr Yoshida stated. “They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that’s my expectation.”
He went on to say, “So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?”
This is great news for consumers. The worry that we would have to buy a game and be forever stuck with it even if it turned out to be a turd seems laughable right now, though, that’s only Sony’s take on the matter. What lies ahead for Microsoft’s next console is yet to be confirmed, but we expect the company to make some sort of announcement regarding their next-generation console at E3, if not sooner.
Though this all sounds good and well, there could still be a change in the way we purchase and play used games. There is still the possibility that you may have to pay the play the used game, not just the retailer or the friend you paid £10 for his copy of whatever game, but there is still the chance that to get full access to a used game you may have to pay a small fee.
Of course, this is just speculation at this point, but it’s another rumour that has gained the attention of many prospective buyers, and it’s certainly not an impossibility. Though, I could be wrong, and I hope I am. We’ll just have to wait until Sony decide to give us more information, until then, we can just pore over the images and videos of the games that were shown off at the PlayStation meeting.
