UPDATE: Once again we’ve all been had by some prankster, the original image comes from DeviantArt user ‘hmcindie’, here’s the link to the original image: http://hmcindie.deviantart.com/art/Getting-Ready-for-War-339654723. We did say remember your salt!
This may not come as much of a surprise, well, none at all, but there’s going to be a new Call of Duty title released this year, with Modern Warfare 4 being the much rumoured title for the next installment in the mega-bucks franchise.
That’s not the biggest news though, we’ve spotted what seems to be the first promo material for the untitled sequel. Spotted over on MordorHQ, the image points to a November 11th 2013 release date, which isn’t hard to imagine as Call of Duty titles are always released in that period.
The authenticity of the image remains questionable, so before you get your knickers in a twist and start dishing out digital high-fives over Facebook (give us one if you like,) take it with a pinch of salt, or even a handful.
Check out the image below:
Whilst it’s not in the least bit surprising to see that another Call of Duty game will be releasing this year, what is a little surprising is the developer. Instead of Infinity Ward’s logo splattered to the bottom of the image its Neversoft’s.
Neversoft are the developers behind the Tony Hawk skateboarding games and the once popular Guitar Hero franchise. To be honest, I had no idea that Neversoft were involved in the franchise, or if they are at all for that matter.
Still, if we assume this is a genuine image that hasn’t been created by some spotty teenager, what does it mean? Why are Neversoft taking the mantle of Modern Warfare 4? What are Infinity Ward, Sledghammer and Raven Software up to? Is this a spin-off and not actually Modern Warfare 4? Could it be a PlayStation Vita title? Are Neversoft handling the current generation iteration whilst the other studios get together and crunch the code for the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox? What does “Ready to get back to basics?” mean? Argh! So many questions!
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, though I reckon we’ll be getting more answers sooner than later. Activision aren’t know for liking leaks, so there’s a chance, if the image is genuine, that the firm will turn it in their favour and put out some PR babble to keep the masses excited and start fuelling up the inevitable hype train.
That being said, remember your salt, this could be an elaborate fake designed to fool the masses for “lulz.” What a stupid word…
