If you’ve been lucky enough to get some hands on time with the awesome Rocket League beta on PS4 then you’ll know just how ridiculously bonkers the whole experience is.
If you weren’t invited to the beta party then here’s a quick run down of what Rocket League is all about.
Rocket League is hoping to be the next big name in the eSport arena by smashing together cars and football (soccer if you reside in North America.)
It seems like a silly idea but in practice it actually works extremely well. It’s due out later this year, but at the moment there’s no solid release date as of yet, though the developers assure us that it will be coming this Summer and not a moment later.
Psyonix Studios, the team behind Rocket League, recently took part in a Reddit AMA where, as expected, they were inundated with various questions from fans of the motor-sport mash up.
When asked about customisation and how players will be able to set themselves apart from their competitors the studio had the following to say:
We’ve taken a different approach for Rocket League. Our main focus for Rocket League is to allow people to customize their cars early and often. There will be a generous amount of options unlocked from the get-go. After that, you’ll unlock one item per match. We did this so there would be a bountiful supply of customization options available!
So if you like to put yourself out there with some funky colours then you’ll be alright with Rocket League.
Rocket League is naturally quite competitive, but despite this there won’t be a tournaments mode from day one, though it is in the long-term goals.
We want to support tournaments as a long-term goal for Rocket League, but it won’t be ready to go on Day 1. If we want to get the game out on time successfully, we had to push that feature into a later release. We want to put it in the game eventually, but we had to focus on completing the core game first.
Maps will be set at a standard size, but there are going to be a few “special” stadiums and they’ll be released post-launch for free. Wicked!
My response from elsewhere – We are going to have a lot of stadiums that are the standard size for competitive play, but there will also be special layouts. On release we will have more of the standard variety but we will continue to release new maps for free post-release.
When asked if there would be any more weather effects and day/night rotations, the developers revealed that they are still running tests while re-iterating their commitment for free DLC stadiums post-release, though other DLC will probably carry a fee.
We are still finalizing it as we test different times of day/ weather effects. But it will be somewhere between 5 and 7. And all other arenas that we have post-release will ALWAYS be free. You will never pay for a new Arena/ Stadium in Rocket League. Ever.
…Other DLC, on the other hand, we will most likely charge for.
The next round of beta testing runs in a couple of weeks so if you’ve signed up to be a guinea pig be sure to keep an eye out for the changes that will be present in the second round of testing.
