How To Start Logging: New World Logging Guide
If you have already read our other gathering guides, this section will also be very familiar to you. If you have already read this section in our other guides, you can move onto the next section, as most of these steps and explanations are the same.
To start Logging in New World, you will need to make a logging axe. You can craft a flint logging axe right away at any campfire or in any settlement. If you are wondering how to craft a flint logging axe, you require the same materials as your do for a flint sickle, used for harvesting:
- 1 Flint
- 1 Green Wood
As we mention in our Complete New World Harvesting guide, the same goes for here. You can find flint lying around pretty much anywhere. Just look where you are running and you will see what look like rocks, usually with a bit of brown/beige color to them. For green wood, you can simply gather any bushes you see around you.
The screenshot below shows a boulder beside several flint. If you see rocks like this laying around, be sure to pick up a few for your crafts. After you gather your flint and green wood, head over to a campfire or a settlement and craft a flint logging axe.
How To Make Logging Faster
Similar to the previous section, If you have already read our other gathering guides, like our Complete New World Mining Guide, this section will also be very familiar to you. If you have already read this section in our other guides, you can move onto the next section, as most of these steps and explanations are the same.
Territory Standing Reputation
The first option to make logging faster, or to make any gathering skill faster, is to choose this option when you rank up in reputation for a region. When you gain Territory Standing in a region, you are allowed to choose 1 of 3 upgrades, which differ each time. Sometimes you will have the option to “Increase Gathering Speed by 3.0%” while in the region. If you chose this, you can begin to stack these to significantly increase your gathering speed while in that region.
Upgrade Your Gathering Tools
Using a flint logging axe will only get you 100% harvesting speed. Sure, 100% sounds like a lot, but this speed is actually pretty slow. If you have some other gathering skills leveled already or some gold to spend at a trading post, you can craft an iron logging axe pretty much right away as well. Crafting an iron logging axe will increase your harvesting speed to 125%-139% depending on the attributes you get.
For how to craft an iron logging axe, head to a work bench inside a settlement and use your engineering skill to craft one. The ingredients you will need are:
- 2 of Any type of leather
- 3 of Any type of timber / refined wood
- 12 Iron Ingots
Where To Get The Materials
You can obtain the leather from skinning animals. For this, you will need to have a flint skinning knife at the very least. You will kill and skin an animal, then take their hide to the tannery in town to turn it into leather. Alternatively, you can buy 1 leather from the Trading Post in town, they should be very cheap.
The same goes for 2 pieces of timber. You will need to take Green Wood into town and cut it into timber. Alternatively, go to the trading post and purchase 2 timber if you are looking for a quick turnaround and do not have the materials yet.
For iron ingots, you can find Iron Veins and use your mining skills to extract iron ore. You will need a mining pick for this, but you can gather these immediately if you have 0 mining skill. You can go out and find these veins, mine the ore, then smelt them in town to create iron ingots. Of course, if they are affordable you may choose to buy them off the trading post if you do not already have these materials. Iron veins can be hard to come by unless you are specifically looking for them.
Once you have gathered the required materials, you can craft the iron logging axe in New World and your logging speed will be significantly faster! Scroll further down our New World Logging Guide to see where you can gather each type of material.
How To Obtain All Tiers of Logging Axe
The efficiency you gain when crafting your first iron logging axe does not stop there. There are 5 tiers of logging axes that you can utilize and upgrade to. Each tier will increase your logging speed, but higher tier axes are not fully required to cut down higher level trees.
An important note to the base gathering speed listed below is that these are the base speeds. You can sometimes roll better speeds if you are lucky or use additional items/azoth which we will cover later in the Complete New World Logging Guide.
Tier | Pickaxe Name | Base Gather Speed | Craft Requirements |
1 | Flint Logging Axe | 100% | 1x Flint 1x Green Wood |
2 | Iron Logging Axe | 125% | 12x Iron Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
3 | Steel Logging Axe | 250% | 13x Steel Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
4 | Starmetal Logging Axe | 400% | 14x Starmetal Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
5 | Orichalcum Logging Axe | 625% | 15x Orichalcum Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
What Is Gatherable at Each Skill Level of Logging?
Resource | Source | Gather Skill |
Green Wood | Young Tree | 0 |
Aged Wood | Mature Tree | 50 |
Wyrdwood | Wyrdwood Tree | 100 |
Ironwood | Ironwood Tree | 175 |
How To Get Better Items and Rare Drops: New World Logging Guide
Food Buffs for Logging in New World
Cooking food is one of the ways to improve your chances at rare items while logging in New World. When you have added logging luck, you have chances to obtain special items. The below table shows all food buffs that currently affect logging luck. Be sure to level up your cooking skill early to make the most of your logging runs!
To understand better how the “luck rating” system works with the overall chances, check out this post, it explains how the RNG works exceptionally well.

1 | Roasted Cabbage | 1,000 | 20 Mins | 1 | 1x Dill 1x Cooking Oil 1x Cabbage |
2 | Boiled Cabbage | 1,400 | 25 Mins | 5 | 1x Saffron 1x Cooking Oil 1x Nut 1x Cabbage |

Charms
When crafting a logging axe, you can use a Lumberjack’s Charm to increase the chance of more rare drops from logging, or increase yield from logging. There are currently five Logging charms in the game:
- Steel Lumberjack’s Charm – gives Lumberjack’s Discipline
- Vial of Sap – gives Logging Luck
- Draught of Sap – gives Logging Luck
- Starmetal Lumberjack’s Charm – gives Logging Luck
- Orichalcum Lumberjack’s Charm – gives Logging Luck
Using these charms when crafting will give you the various logging perks. These rare resources will be discussed in the next section of the Complete New World Logging Guide.
How To Hold More Weight In New World
In addition to food buffs that you can used while Logging for extra luck, you may find yourself getting full bags and becoming encumbered. Being encumbered means you will walk instead of run, and you will not be able to recall to an inn or fast travel. This can be quite a set back when trying to make a big haul of wood before you head back to town.
Luckily, there are currently 3 encumbrance potions you can chug to increase your encumbrance amount for a period of time. This may be just enough to farm more and recall with all your goodies. Unfortunately we do not have the data quite yet on exactly how much encumbrance limit is increased per potion, but will update this table when the data is available.
Tier | Potion Name | Encumbrance Limit Increase | Level Req. |
3 | Strong Encumbrance Potion | +50 Weight Limit | 20 |
4 | Powerful Encumbrance Potion | +75 Weight Limit | 40 |
5 | Infused Encumbrance Potion | +100 Weight Limit | 60 |
How To Increase Yield to Get More Materials From Logging
Consume Proficiency Potions to Raise Yield of all Gathering Skills Temporarily
Another way to raise yield temporarily while on a logging run is to craft and consume Proficiency Booster potions. Some people think since this is a potion it must be crafted using the Arcana skill, but it is actually crafted using the Engineering skill, using a Workshop.
Here are all the current proficiency potions available in New World:
Tier | Potion Name | Increase in Yield | Duration | Level Req. | Ingredients |
2 | Weak Proficiency Booster | 5% | 10 Mins | 5 | 1x Water 1x Soul Mote 1x Air Mote |
3 | Common Proficiency Booster | 7% | 15 Mins | 20 | 1x Water 1x Soul Wisp 1x Air wisp |
4 | Strong Proficiency Booster | 10% | 20 Mins | 40 | 1x Water 1x Soul Essence 1x Air Essence |
5 | Powerful Proficiency Booster | 15% | 30 Mins | 60 | 1x Soul Quintessence 1x Air Quintessence |
Add Perks to Raise Yield from Logging
When you are crafting any of your logging axes, they all have chances to add a perk. A perk will give your logging axe a special attribute that may increase different aspects of the item.
You can add either a special item to your craft, or you can also add Azoth when crafting to increase the chance of getting a perk. Some of these perks increase the amount of items, or the yield, you can get from logging. To increase the yield and get more wood out of logging, you will want the “Logging Yield” Perk on your logging axe, which makes it yield 10% more resources.
You can also add perks to armor and amulets, as discussed in the next section. Utilizing as many of these as you can in your gear set will maximize yield.
All Available Logging Perks in New World
The following table is a list of all the currently available perks you can add to benefit logging when crafting. Keep this in mind if you are looking to increase your yield, make logging faster, or have better chances at finding rare items while logging.
As you will read in the description, each of these perks scales depending on the gear score it is applied to. The higher the gear score, the better your perk!
Currently there are only 2 perks known for logging. As new information comes out or is added to the same, we will update this table.

Where To Find Young Trees (Green Wood) and Mature Trees (Aged Wood)
Both Green Wood and Aged Wood are incredibly easy to farm. We won’t go over all the places to farm these because they are literally everywhere. Wherever you see a tree, you pretty much have Green Wood or Aged Wood.
You can obtain Green Wood from bushes, or use can use your logging axe to cut down Young Trees anywhere you see a thin tree. You can obtain Aged Wood from Mature trees, which are usually thicker or have some signs of more “wearing down” on them. The issue is, it’s not really clear visually until you walk up to a tree and it says what kind of tree it is.
Where to Find Ironwood Trees in New World
Ironwood can be hard to come by, so it’s always beneficial to know which areas to target. When you are specifically looking to farm Ironwood in New World, you can head to the areas we share in this section for the best farming locations.
Edengrove – Best Location for Ironwood in New World
The best, most densely populated place to farm Ironwood in New World is in Edengrove. Head south from Valor Hold, or used the south fast travel point and head west. Throughout this route there are many Ironwood trees available to log.
Shattered Mountain – 2nd Best Farming Location for Ironwood
The second best place for farming Ironwood is on the very east side of Shattered Mountain. There are many spawns here, but they are a bit more spread out than Edengrove.
This area also happens to be the best spot for Wyrmwood. There are Angry Earth wolves that roam this area and respawn very quickly. When you kill these wolves, you are able to log them, just as you would if you were skinning them.
Reekwater – 3rd Best Ironwood Logging Spot
Perhaps tied for second, Reekwater is another great option as the spawn point for Ironwood are nice and close together, right on top of the east fast travel shrine.
Ebonscale – Alternative Farming Spot for Ironwood
There are also some locations of Ironwood Trees in Ebonscale. They are fairly scarce and the three areas are quick spread out. It is an option if you are in the area, but not the best place if you are specifically looking to farm Ironwood.
Ironwood Farming – Other Regions
Beyond the four farming regions we have listed above, Ironwood Trees do exist in other regions. The regions not mentioned here have a very scarce amount of Ironwood Trees and are not suggested as a destination to farm at.
Wyrdwood Tree Farming Locations in New World
Wyrdwood Trees produce the tier 4 level of wood in New World. These trees can also be very difficult to find in New World, so we have provided the best areas to target if you are specifically looking for them. Another source of Wyrdwood is killing the Angry Earth wolves in the areas near the Wyrdwood trees. When you kill these enemies, you can log their bodies, similar to skinning an animal.
Brightwood – Best Wyrdwood Location in New World
Brightwood is a great area to farm Wyrdwood Trees. If you head to the south east area of the region, there are many spawns very close together, right beside a fast travel shrine. A second option is in the north east corner of the region, were you can fine a few more widely spread nodes.
Shattered Mountain – 2nd Best Wyrdwood Farming Location
As we mentioned in the Ironwood section of this guide, there is a collection of Ironwood spawns we have shown in the image above. All around this area there are many Angry Earth wolves that have a very quick respawn timer. If you farm these wolves, you can log their corpses to obtain Wyrdwood logs.
Great Cleave – Great Alternative Best Farming Location for Wyrdwood Trees in New World
There are three main options in Great Cleave to farm Wyrdwood. Our favorite is to focus on the top 2 circled areas in our screenshot. Heading directly to the east side of the region, as well as a bit more north, will allow you to target two fairly dense areas of Wyrdwood. A third option is down in the south east area of the region.
Reekwater – Wyrdwood Farming Area
In Reekwater, you will find 7 spawn locations just south of Reekwater Town. These can be a good location to search for some Wyrdwood Trees if you are around the area.
Other Regions – Wyrdwood
Wyrdwood Trees also appear in a few other regions in New World, but the amount or density of their spawns are far worse than what we have highlighted above. Nontheless, you may find a few in Cutlass Keys, First Light, Windsward, and Everfall to name a few. Don’t forget that you can utilize the Interactive New World Map to find these as well.
