It’s no surprise that Gran Turismo is the best-selling racing franchise on Sony’s consoles. With the very first one coming out on PS1 in 1997, it has sold over 67.8 million copies in total around the world. Here are the sales figures for each entry:
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2) – 14.89 million
Gran Turismo 4 (PS2) – 11.6 million
Gran Turismo (PSX) – 10.85 million
Gran Turismo 2 (PSX) – 9.37 million
Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) – 9.01 million units
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) – 5.35 million
Gran Turismo (PSP) – 3.86 million
Gran Turismo Concept Series (PS2) – 1.56 million
Gran Turismo 4 Prologue (PS2) – 1.4 million
Fans of the series are all eagerly awaiting any news on Gran Turismo 6 (which is rumoured to feature Bathurst as a track in the game) and if it will be developed for the PS4. We can also safely assume there is a Gran Turismo in the works for Vita.
Interestingly, different territories seem to prefer different games in the series. In Japan, the best-selling Gran Turismo game is the original, with Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec coming in second and Gran Turismo 2 coming in third. But in North America, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is the best-selling game in the series, with the two Gran Turismo titles on the original PlayStation essentially tied for second.
Europe, on the other hand, most preferred Gran Turismo 4, with Gran Turismo 5 coming in second and Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec coming in third. And other Asian countries (excluding Japan) most preferred Gran Turismo 5, with Gran Turismo 4 and Gran Turismo 4: Prologue coming in second and third in units sold.
