Next-gen thrills and kills
GTA V for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is almost here and Rockstar has dripped a few more details on what players can expect when they return to Los Santos on March 15th.
Three ways to play
GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will come with a few different performance profiles. If you value fancier graphics and a true 4K resolution, you’ll be set with Fidelity Mode. If you’re all about that 60fps life, Performance Mode is there for you. And on PS5 and Xbox Series X, there’s even a hybrid of the two that combines Performance Mode with some of the features of Fidelity Mode.
Fidelity Mode:
Fidelity Mode will offer the best visual experience with a native 4K resolution, ray tracing, and a 30fps cap. That’s on PS5 and Xbox Series X. If you’re on the Series S, you’ll get the same features, minus the native 4K, which is instead upscaled 4K resolution.
Performance Mode:
On PS5 and Xbox Series X, you’ll get that sweet 60fps responsive gameplay with an upscaled 4K resolution. On Xbox Series S, the resolution is capped at 1080p.
Performance RT Mode:
This mode is only available on PS5 and Xbox Series X. You’ll get a mix of ray tracing, upscaled 4K resolution, and a 60fps target.
What else is improved?
Rockstar states that these next-gen versions will feature “across-the-board improvements” that include faster load times, cities that feel more alive with denser populations and traffic. And when you’re on the lam from the law, legging it through the hills to make your final stand atop the mysterious Mount Chilead, you’ll notice denser vegetation, improved lighting as the sun beats down on your face for the last time, and improved shadows as the helicopter circles above, raining hellfire on your crime-loving booty.
GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will also benefit from improved anti-aliasing for a cleaner image, as well as improved motion-blur, explosions, fire, and more.
If you’re on PS5, you’ll be treated to some additional features thanks to Rockstar’s support of the DualSense controller, which will offer feedback for weapons, driving, weather, and even directional damage. You’ll also get Tempest 3D positional audio on PS5 and Spatial Sound on Series X|S.
What about GTA Online?
After eight years of updates, it would be a waste to throw away all of that hard work, right? Rockstar agrees, which is why the developer is bringing over the entire experience in full for GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What’s more is that your progress can be carried over, too. So if you’ve been working on your game for a long time and you’ve managed to build up a criminal enterprise worth keeping a hold of, you’ll be able to transfer your GTA Online character to the next-gen version of the game.
Likewise, if you’ve invested heavily in the Story Mode, you’ll be able to do a one-time transfer of your save to the next-gen edition. This is available to do as of today via the Rockstar Games Social Club, which you’ll find in the GTA V game menu.
GTA V will release on March 15th for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as a digital release. There will be a physical retail release at a later date in April, though no exact date has been announced for the disc version of the game.
