It looks like Sony’s PS Now service may have some real competition from Square Enix’s new side company, Shinra Technologies.
Square Enix recently announced the forming of Shinra Technologies and explained that the firm is commited to bringing cloud gaming to the masses via their patented technology.
“Shinra uses its original architecture to offer games with the power of a “virtual supercomputer,” thus enabling radically new experiences not possible on PCs or game consoles. All games are streamed as video, and Shinra requires no particular hardware to play its games. Furthermore, Shinra has partnered with world-class infrastructure and network providers to ensure high video quality and minimal latency.”
According to the press release there are a number of the worlds best developers undergoing negotiations with Shinra Technologies.
“Ubisoft has long believed that the cloud will play an important part in gaming’s future,” said Yves Guillemot, CEO and co-founder of Ubisoft. “We are intrigued by the direction Shinra Technologies, Inc. is taking and look forward to seeing what their architecture and technologies can deliver.”
Interesting. Where five years ago we may have laughed off the idea of our game being delivered via the mystical cloud, today it seems to be not just a reality, but a common practice. Cloud gaming has effectively already been happening for a while, what with OnLive’s game streaming service.
