A while ago it was made public knowledge that the popular ARMA II mod – DayZ – would be getting a release on Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4, with no word on a release on the Xbox One. Now it seems we have a reason why no Xbox One version has been announced.
Speaking with Edge Online Dean Hall, the creator, spoke out on why DayZ may not make it to Microsoft’s platform.
“We’re happy to see DayZ on any console but there is a… I guess one problem,” he stated. “The console needs to not charge for us to do updates and it needs to be indie title friendly.”
Basically, the cost of updating and patching a game costs the developer money as Microsoft charges per update. So every time a problem is found within the game it would cost the developers a big sum of money to rectify the problem, and with games that are constantly being updated with new content, bug fixes and so on, these charges to update could soon add up.
Apparently this isn’t to be a problem with Sony, as Hall claims that Sony doesn’t pass on a charge to the developer for pushing through updates, though they have in the past.
“As far as I’m aware, Microsoft is, Sony’s not, and Sony allows you to self-publish. But who knows? Maybe Microsoft will change. From our perspective, we need self-publishing because DayZ would be a great digital download title.”
As it stands, it’s starting to look like the PS4 will be the second home for DayZ, away from the PC.
