I’ll keep it short. The release date set by Sony for Killzone: Mercenary means something. What I think it means? Well, obviously it means the game is going to come out on the 17th (might be moved though to avoid the steam-roller that is GTA V), but I think it also means something else. Something I think that is a good sign (hopefully) for the PS Vita.
After the slew of PS Vita news yesterday, it’s pretty safe to say 2013 isn’t shaping up to be a fantastic year for the PS Vita. I think Sony was trying to do the same thing Nintendo was, and that was announcing a bunch of stuff to make their console/portable’s future look bright. Maybe that wasn’t what they were going for, but it kind of seemed like it.Anyways, they only had two games to talk about and show: Tearaway and Killzone: Mercenary.
The latter of which has received a release date of September 17th. What does this mean to me? Well, first off, why put your seemingly biggest game of 2013 in September… and not November. As demonstrated last year, 2011, and previous years, Sony always puts their hardest hitter out in November (like most publishers do). All-Stars came out November 20th, 2012. Uncharted 3 came out November 1st, 2011. Gran Turismo 5 in November, 2010, etc…
What I see here is that Sony still has a game or two up their sleeve for Vita in 2013. Whether it be first party, second, or third, I think we’re going to see something much-needed for the Vita announced on the 1st of February, or the 20th (PlayStation Destination). Secondly, this game is a first-person shooter. This is the category the Vita was virtually made for. Designed for. The only two entries into the category haven’t been pleasant experiences for most campers (no pun intended). A first-person shooter is what could and should be the must-have title for the system. It’s something that will drive sales if done right. Killzone: Mercenary is what will (probably and hopefully) do just that.
So going off of all that, why put it in September? Games sell well in September, yes, but they sell even better in November, and Sony decided to put their seemingly most important Vita titles of 2013 out in September. Either the PS Vita really is doomed, or (in my opinion, the more likely scenario) the PS Vita is just getting started. We’ve also seen the recent teaser for (presumably) a new God of War game. Might it be for the PS Vita? It’s either that, or a teaser for a teaser teasing the commercial set to air during the Super Bowl.
In the end, only time will tell how the Vita shapes up… also how the Super Bowl finishes… but that’s a whole other story.
