Building up to the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on Friday, 18 November, 2022 on Nintendo Switch, players may have recently noticed mysterious gold coins popping up during their sessions of Pokemon GO after interacting with the also newly appears Gold Pokestops. But what do they mean? Let’s get into what exactly are the Mysterious Coins in Pokemon GO.

What Is The Mysterious Coin In Pokemon GO?
After spinning a Gold Pokestop, of which you are easily able to spot on your map, you’ll get your usual Pokestop rewards, but chances are you’ll also get a Mysterious Coin as well. Being able to carry up to 100 at a time, the gold coins are merely listed in your inventory as “?????? Coin” with a description “A coin with a mysterious air. It seems to have originated in the Paldea region”.
After collecting your first Mysterious Coin, you’ll be introduced to Jacq, an academy teacher from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, who is also a friend of Professor Willow. The conversation doesn’t give loads to go on, but Willow ultimately encourages you to collect a few more.
It seems these mysterious gold coins are connected to Gimmighoul, the newly revealed Paldean ghost-type Pokemon whose two forms; Chest Form and Roaming Form; utilise the gold coins. The Chest Form resides in its namesake chest full of gold coins and the Roaming Form carries just one coin on its back. In fact, whilst you’re on your map in Pokemon GO, Gimmighoul will appear to give you directions on where the next coin might be.
What might be the key to the Mysterious Coins is part of Gimmighoul’s lore, explained in the above video – encouraging its chest to be filled to 999 gold coins. Although we can only carry 100 of these in Pokemon GO, Gimmighoul pushing others to get more coins for him might mean that getting a certain number is how to catch it – or something even beyond that like it’s evolution.
There’s no further information right now, but hopefully, we’ll get a new update following Scarlet and Violet’s release on 18 November!
