The dream of many a PS4 owner is to be able to set up custom themes and backgrounds and, for a few at least, this dream is a reality.
For those fortunate enough to be able to place hands on a development kit, the dream of creating custom dynamic themes and backgrounds is only limited by technical skill and imagination.
One such lucky bugger recently posted some examples of their own PS4 custom dynamic themes created with a development kit over on NeoGaf, check them out below.
And then there’s the PS2-inspired examples. They actually look pretty darn cool.
Explaining how these themes came together, the user going by the name m0dus (who’s actually a developer over at Naughty Dog) stated:
“I literally threw these together in a couple hours after I learned how to set things up 😀 Low poly primitives, no textures, and I didn’t even touch the icons yet (which were my thing on the PS3, and these are 10x the size!)”
When asked how custom theme development works in comparison to PS3 and whether custom music is supported, how long until a theme loops and so on, he answered:
“The answers are more than I could’ve dreamed 3 years ago. I’ll leave it at that. :)”
Here’s to hoping that Sony will someday allow custom PS4 themes in the future. The current offerings are… abysmal.
It should be noted that the developer in question is actually developing themes for the PS4, so while they may be able to create some nice stuff for their own use, the rest of us mere mortals are stuck with whatever goes on the store, though it would be great to get some of these early examples in a fully-fleshed out form.
