A new IP is in the works at Housemarque
Returnal developer Housemarque may have had great success with Returnal as a PS5 launch game, but the studio isn’t going to be churning out sequels any time soon.
In a recent interview with Venture Beat, managing director of Housemarque, Ilari Kuittinen, was asked if the now Sony-owned studio would be looking to add to its parent company’s growing library of live-service games. Thankfully, for fans of the developer’s output at least, that doesn’t seem to be where the developer is heading.
We had our stint working on multiplayer games, because a few years back it seemed like you needed to have some kind of multiplayer experience. We tried that, and we really didn’t do it as well. But it’s early days with us starting a new game, a new IP, concepting it out. We’ll see what comes with that.

Housemarque is best known for its arcade-inspired releases, like Resogun, Super Stardust HD, and more recently, 2021’s Returnal, which itself was a massive shift for the developer while also retaining the core sensibilities that the developer is known for.
But with Housemarque now working on a new IP – albeit in the very early stages – it could be a while before Returnal 2… returns. If they don’t play around with the title for the sequel, they’re leaving a good gag on the table. Returnal 2: The Return of Returnal. The Returnal Returns? Share your worst ideas in the comments.
