Back when Uncharted first launched for the Playstation 3 with Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, gamers and critics alike were in awe of the stunning visuals, immersive character driven story as well as surprising us with a strong female character matching up to the lead male character, Nathan Drake.
Fast forward 5 years and we find ourselves in pretty much the same situation all over again. A fresh, new and powerful Sony console and an Uncharted game to wow players and critics once again.
Things are a little bit different, this time around we are on a handheld console instead of a beefy home console set up, and Nathan Drake’s latest adventure (not really latest as it’s a prequel, but you know what we mean) is being dished out to us by SCE Bend studio instead of Naughty Dog.
SCE Bend did a great job and proved that they are well aware of what it takes to create a great game. After taking a console franchise renowned for its leader-of-the-pack graphics and thrilling gameplay, and cramming it all onto a very capable handheld system without taking away from the experience, they more than deserve any praise put their way.
The experience we get to hold in our hands today is no small feat either, the task of bringing Nathan to the PS Vita, or NGP as it was known back when SCE Bend were first handed the project, wasn’t easy and took over 2 years to produce the end product. The studio had to learn to adapt to a new system, create a new story worthy of Uncharted lore and most importantly, make Nathan’s transition from Playstation 3 to Playstation Vita a smoother journey than he is used to.
John Garvin, Jeff Ross, Francois Gilbert and Chris Reese detail the intricate workings of the studio as they struggled against the odds to deliver the first ever Uncharted game for the PS Vita. Read the entire post-mortem here.
It’s a long read, but definitely a must for those who have any interest in what goes on behind the scenes of the games you enjoy.
