I’ve always wanted to cast magic because it would probably make my life easier—and it would be pretty cool too. Imagine the limits of conjuring powerful and unique spells whenever you please. Well, Ghostwire: Tokyo gives just that. You can cast spells by performing Kuji-kiri inspired hand gestures. Unfortunately, you will be using magic to battle evil Japanese entities.
Tango Gameworks, who is known for their survival horror video game series The Evil Within, has announced their newest game last E3 2019. It is getting more exciting since the initial release date is now on the horizon. Ghostwire: Tokyo is an action horror game set on a different version of modern-day Tokyo.
The city is attacked by a mysterious man named Hannya and his supernatural acolytes, they are probably the reason why 99% of the city’s population vanished. We still don’t know your enemies’ main goal though. Do they want to achieve total control of the city? Or they just attacked the city because they felt like it? We’ll probably have answers when we play the full version of the game. Either way, it is now your job to fight through the haunted city and save everyone.
Japanese culture fans will probably love the villains of the game since Hannya and his acolytes are based on Japanese urban legends and folklore. For example, Hannya is probably based on Japanese theatre plays wherein the people who play female demons wear “Hannya” masks.
You can also see Kuchisake in the latest trailer of the game, she is inspired by a Japanese urban legend “Kuchisake-onna” who covers herself with a facemask and kills her victims if they don’t find her attractive. These are just some of the multiple entities that are based on urban legends you have to fight in the game.
People will always find some aspects of the game that they find interesting to lure them into buying it. And all of the things that are mentioned above are just some of the multiple features that Ghostwire: Tokyo offers.
There are a lot of reasons why a person must look forward to playing this game. For instance, I think this is the first that I have seen a game wherein you conjure magic with your hands to defeat Japanese folklore enemies. And as a person who badly wants to visit Tokyo, the most enticing feature of the game is its setting—because who doesn’t love Tokyo? Just imagining the immersive feeling traversing through the streets of the city is enough reason for me to play it.
Ghostwire: Tokyo is set for release in Spring 2022 and will be available for Microsoft Windows and as a timed exclusive for the Playstation 5.
