The Last Guardian has long been the holy-grail of gaming. Is it real? Is it not? Will we ever see it? Will we be able to rub the disc across our greedy faces? We got our answer pretty quickly during Sony’s E3 2015 presser as it was the first thing the Japanese firm showed off.
Since then we’ve not heard much about the game, but we do know it’s slated for a 2016 release and will be coming to the PS4. What we don’t know is how far along the game is in terms of development. Thankfully, game director Ueda has given some new insight into what’s going on with the lads and lady’s who’re working hard to bring The Last Guardian to living rooms across the world.
Speaking during an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Ueda was asked how far along the game is and was asked to give a percentage.
“It’s hard to answer this question in percentage. I don’t know how the readers will react to what I’m going to say, if they take it as a plus or look at it more negatively, but the level we showed in the E3 trailer was something that we had originally created for the PS3 and had been already finished in July 2010. We ported it to the PS4 brushed it up and showed it via the trailer.”
Ueda goes on to speak about the technical difficulties faced by the team during the development on the PS3, but despite being moved over to the PS4, there are still some hurdles to overcome.
“That said, there are still some technical problems that we haven’t cleared until now. There are also things where we couldn’t render a thing that worked on the PS3 by just porting it to the PS4. Concerning such things there are still several problems left.”
He then goes on to explain that the design of the game hasn’t changed dramatically, despite being moved to the more powerful PS4, and that the team is trying to create a graphical style that doesn’t put too much pressure on the console.
“There are some things but not a lot at present. The game design hasn’t changed after all. We were able to up the resolution by porting to the PS4, but concerning the graphic style we are going for it’s a „universal“ one that doesn’t depend so much on processing power or the CPU etc.”
It doesn’t mean to say that The Last Guardian won’t be even more impressive on the PS4 than it would have been on the PS3.
“That said we’re still working on improving the graphics so together with the unique game design I hope everyone is looking forward to a great game.”
